European Agencies Use OGC Standards in Meteorology

Workshop participants reviewed applications of OGC and other standard Web services, encodings, and analytical methodologies being used across the meteorology community; discussed the relationship between the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and OGC; and defined a roadmap for further activities of the OGC Meteorology & Oceanography Domain Working Group. The Met Office (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/) and Meteo-France (http://france.meteofrance.com/) are the UKs and Frances National Weather Services. The European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) (http: //www.ecmwf.int/) is an international European organization located in Reading, UK.The OGC® is an international consortium of more than 385 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available geospatial standards.OGC Standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.

Koreas OGC Interoperability Day Highlights Ambitious Geospatial Infrastructure Programs

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) Korea Forum and the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KHRIS) co-hosted an OGC Interoperability Day event on 18 November at the KHRIS facility in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. The day-long program included talks by business, government and academic leaders on topics related to geospatial standardization and interoperability in the context of ubiquitous information services. As a follow up to the event, Dr. Hyong-Bok Kim and Jinsoo You, Chair of OGC Korea, will present an Introduction to the Korea U-City initiative on Monday, 7 December at the OGC Technical Committee Meeting (http://www.opengeospatial.org/event/0912tcagenda) in Mountain View, California.Korean companies and organizations are becoming increasingly active in the OGC standardization process as major geospatial programs get underway in Korea.A catalyst for this involvement is the OGC Korea Forum.

OGC Seeks Participants for International Hydrology Interoperability Experiment

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) will launch a Hydrology Interoperability Experiment (HDWG_IE1) on December 8, 2009.The initiators of the experiment seek participation by other organizations interested in developing standard ways of discovering, sharing and interpreting groundwater data using OGC Web Services (OWS) interface and encoding standards. This interoperability experiment will advance the development of WaterML 2.0 and test its use with various OWS standards, including the OGC Sensor Observation Service (SOS), Web Map Service (WMS), Web Feature Service (WFS), and Catalog Service Web (CSW) Interface Standards.Initiators of the experiment are: Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), US Geological Survey (USGS), and Australias Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).The OGC® is an international consortium of more than 385 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available geospatial standards.

The OGC Announces Call for Participation in OWS-7 Testbed

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) has issued a Request for Quotes/Call for Participation (RFQ/CFP) for the OGC Web Services, Phase 7 (OWS-7) Interoperability Initiative, a testbed to advance OGCs open interoperability framework for geospatial capabilities. The organizations sponsoring OWS-7 seek open standards that address their interoperability requirements. The goal of the fusion threads is to move those capabilities into a distributed architecture based upon open standards including standards for notifications, security, authorization, and workflow processing. In OGCs Interoperability Initiatives, international teams of technology providers work together to solve specific geoprocessing interoperability problems posed by the Initiatives’ Sponsors.OGC Interoperability Initiatives include testbeds, pilot projects, interoperability experiments and interoperability support services – all designed to encourage rapid development, testing, validation and adoption of OGC standards.

OGC Joins World Standards Day, Tackling climate change through standards

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) joins the World Standards Day celebration, announcing a Climate Challenge Integration Plugfest (CCIP).In accordance with this years theme for World Standards Day, Tackling climate change through standards, the OGC, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) will conduct a Climate Challenge Integration Plugfest (CCIP) at the FOSS4G (Free, Open Source Software for Geomatics) Conference in Sydney, Australia, 20-23 October, 2009.The OGC supports the climate change community in efforts such as:- The OGC leads architecture development and interoperability demonstrations for the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) (http://earthobservations.org/about_geo.shtml).- Geoscientists involved in ocean observation, meteorology and hydrology are embracing OGC standards. This framework is a critical asset for those who are working to understand and mitigate climate change and its impacts.

GEOSS Interoperability Pilot Completed with OGC Leadership

The GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot, Phase 2 (AIP-2) has been completed with leadership by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®).The AIP-2 Pilot activity, which began in September 2008, is a project of the GEO (Group on Earth Observations) AR-09-01b Task Team.Videos of demonstrations developed in AIP-2 for six Communities of Practice are posted on the OGC website at http://www.ogcnetwork.net/pub/ogcnetwork/GEOSS/AIP2/index.html.AIP-2 developed a reusable process for Societal Benefit Areas to utilize the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI).GCI is built upon GEOSS Interoperability Arrangements, including several OGC standards.

European Agencies Announce Workshop on Use of OGC Standards in Meteorology

The upcoming workshop will highlight recent progress in OGC standards and highlight the upcoming Phase 7 OGC Web Services testbed activity (OWS-7).The Met Office (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/) and Météo-France (http://france.meteofrance.com/) are the UKs and Frances National Weather Services. The European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) (http : //www.ecmwf.int/) is an international European organization located in Reading, UK.The OGC® is an international consortium of more than 380 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available geospatial standards.OGC Standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.

OGC’s CTO, Carl Reed, Inducted into URISA Hall of Fame

The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC(R)) announces that Dr. Carl Reed, the CTO and Executive Director of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Standards Program, has been inducted into the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) GIS Hall of Fame.URISA established the GIS Hall of Fame to recognize and honor leaders of the geospatial community.URISA Hall of Fame Laureates are individuals or organizations whose pioneering work has moved the geospatial industry in a better, stronger direction. This groundbreaking project proved that geospatial interoperability was a realistic goal, and was a key factor in David Schells decision to start the OpenGIS Consortium (now the Open Geospatial Consortium).OGC Standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.
