OGC Releases Discussion Papers: Uncertainty Markup Language and OGC WCS Extension for netCDF Weather Data

The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC®) announces the release of two Discussion Papers: Uncertainty Markup Language (UncertML) (https://portal.ogc.org/files/?artifact_id=33234) and the OpenGIS® Web Coverage Service Standard (WCS) Extension for CF-netCDF Encoding (https://portal.ogc.org/files/?artifact_id=32195).Most data contains uncertainty arising from sources such as measurement error, observation operator error, processing/modeling errors, or corruption.UncertML utilizes the OGC Geography Markup Language (GML) Standard and the OGC Sensor Web Enablement Common (SWE) Standard. The OGC Web Coverage Service Standard (WCS) Extension for CF-netCDF Encoding provides a way for users of CF-NetCDF (http://cf-pcmdi.llnl.gov/) data to use the OpenGIS Web Coverage Service Interface Standard (WCS).OGC Standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.

OGC Forms Hydrology and Meteorology Domain Working Groups

The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC(R)) announces the formation of Domain Working Groups (DWG) for Hydrology (http://www.opengeospatial.org/projects/groups/hydrologydwg ) and Meteorology (http://www.opengeospatial.org/projects/groups/meteodwg ).The OGC’s standards are enabling a new degree of interoperability within and between the hydrology and meteorology communities. This working group is to be hosted by the OGC and co-chaired by a representative from the World Meteorological Organisation’s (WMO) Commission for Hydrology (CHy) (http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/hwrp/chy/chy_index.html ).The OGC’s current standards are enabling a new degree of interoperability within and between the hydrology and meteorology communities.OGC Standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.

OGC Calls for Comment on revision to OGC Web Services Common Standard

The members of the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC®) request comments to a revision to the OpenGIS® Web Services Common Standard. This document specifies many of the aspects that are common to multiple OGC Web Service (OWS) interface Implementation Standards. Those standards currently include the OpenGIS Web Map Service (WMS), Web Feature Service (WFS), and Web Coverage Service (WCS) Standards. The intent is to edit the OWS Common standard and move the revised document to be an approved OGC standard. The OpenGIS® Web Services Common Standard Request for Comment document can be downloaded from http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/requests/57.

OGC Calls for Proposals for Empire Challenge 09 Pilot

Wayland, Mass., April 17, 2009 – The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC®) announces the reopening of a Request For Quotations and Call for Participation (RFQ/CFP) to solicit proposals for the Empire Challenge 09 Pilot (EC09 OGC Pilot) that was originally posted in December 2008 and then withdrawn for lack of funding. The sponsor and the OGC are soliciting proposals that provide working services that implement the OpenGIS® Sensor Alert Service (SAS) Best Practice Document on several networks. The EC09 OGC Pilot will examine the suitability and performance of the SAS specification for providing alerts.Details on the extent of this request, contact information, and the original EC09 OGC Pilot RFQ/CFP documents can be downloaded from: http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/requests/56 .OGC Standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.

NOAA Takes Principal Membership in the OGC(R)

The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) (http://www.opengeospatial.org) announced that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) (http://www.noaa.gov) has become a Principal Member of the OGC.Principal Members also have approval authority for OGC policies and procedures.By becoming a Principal Member, NOAA increases its leadership role among the OGCs government, industry, academic and research members, who are working worldwide to tackle interoperability challenges related to monitoring, forecasting and predicting of weather, climate, and ocean processes. As a Principal Member, we look forward to becoming more engaged with OGCs many relevant and important initiatives.OGC Standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.

Athina Trakas Joins OGC(R) as Director European Services

The Open Geospatial Consortium OGC® announced that Athina Trakas has been appointed as Director European Services for the OGC.In her new position, Ms. Trakas will plan and manage OGC outreach and recruitment in Europe, working out of the OGCs Bonn office.European membership in the OGC recently surpassed North American membership, and we anticipate a lot of activity as European companies and organizations seek to evolve geospatial standards that address European needs.Athina Trakas has worked part time for the OGC since August 2006.OGC Standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.

OGC(R) Announces Web Coverage Processing Service Standard

The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC®) announces adoption and availability of the OpenGIS(R) Web Coverage Processing Service (WCPS) Interface Standard. The OpenGIS(R) Web Coverage Service Interface Standard (WCS) defines a protocol-independent language for the extraction, processing, and analysis of multi-dimensional gridded coverages (see http://www.opengeospatial.org/ogc/glossary/c | coverages) representing sensor, image, or statistics data.Services implementing this language provide access to original or derived sets of geospatial coverage information, in forms that are useful for client-side rendering, input into scientific models, and other client applications.Further information about WCPS can be found at the http://www.ogcnetwork.net/wcps | WCPS Service page of the OGC Network.OGC Standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.

OGC(R) announces HellasGI Greek Interoperability Day

OGC standards are becoming widely used in the geospatial world and they hold the key to building geospatial data infrastructures based on interoperable components. While market demand for standards-compliant components is growing, many end users have questions about how the standards work and how the standards will benefit them in their day to day business.Attendees at the OGC & HellasGI Greek Interoperability Day will have a chance to get first-hand answers to such questions.OGC Standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.Visit the OGC website at http://www.opengeospatial.org/.
