OGC Seminar Will Demonstrate Benefits of Geospatial Interoperability

Wayland, MA, September 21, 2006 – The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc.® (OGC), in association with the Geospatial Information and TechnologyAssociation (GITA) will host an Interoperability Day Seminar focusingon the confirmed benefits of using standards-based interoperablegeospatial technologies and the challenges for the future.A diverse panel with representatives from Oak Ridge National Labs,Canadian Forest Service, U.S.During lunch and the social, OGCmembers will be available to demonstrate their interoperable solutionsat the Vendor Interoperability Showcase. The OGC® is an international industry consortium of more than 320companies, government agencies, research organizations, anduniversities participating in a consensus process to develop publiclyavailable interface specifications. The specifications empowertechnology developers to make complex spatial information and servicesaccessible and useful with all kinds of applications.

OGC Elects Two New Directors

Dr. R. Siva Kumar and Ben Eazzetta have been elected to the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC®) Board of Directors.Active in OGC affairs for several years, he has played a leading role in creating awareness of OGC in the Indian government.Ben Eazzetta brings with him an industrial process perspective that is of great value to OGC at a time when the market for spatial information is being expanded and recharacterized. These new directors will help the OGC meet its two main challenges: to address international growth and to address information community interoperability requirements that go beyond the now largely solved problem of communication between different geospatial software products. They empower developers to make complex spatial information and services useful with all kinds of applications.

OGC Membership Approves Four Sensor Related OGCtSpecifications

The vision is to build a Sensor Web, a network of sensors accessible over the Internet to serve scientists and others as they try to better understand our world. The OpenGIS® Sensor Model Language (SensorML) Implementation Specification describes an information model and encodings that enable discovery and tasking of Web-resident sensors, and exploitation of sensor observations. The OpenGIS Sensor Observation Service (SOS) Implementation Specification provides access to observations from sensors and sensor systems in a standard way that is consistent for all sensor systems including remote, in-situ, fixed and mobile sensors. The OGC standards will be made freely available at the OGC website in the coming weeks.OpenGIS Specifications support interoperable solutions that geo-enable the Web, wireless and location services, and mainstream IT.

Vendors Bring Expertise to Standards-based Watershed Portal

From a user perspective, that means that once a watershed model is selected, the necessary data sets are automatically chosen. The dataset will provide a visual backdrop for modeling.FMSM Engineers, of Louisville, KY, will provide expertise on watershed modeling and will help develop Web services to access local data sources.See http://www.opengeospatial.org ESRI has been dedicated to the building and use of geographic information systems (GIS) for more than 30 years. Our suite of geospatial information services focused on:FMSM was founded in 1966 as a civil engineering and design firm with emphasis in geotechnical engineering and related earth sciences.Because of our intense focus on our clients and their need for solutions to complicated problems, our service offerings have grown to include environmental, water resources and seismic engineering, geographic information systems, and information systems.

The OGC(R) Releases GeoRSS White Paper

Wayland, Mass., July 20, 2006 – The membership of the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) has released the OGC GeoRSS White Paper to the public ( OGC Document 06-050r3 ).GeoRSS is a simple proposal for geo-enabling, or tagging, really simple syndication (RSS) feeds with location information.GeoRSS standardizes the way in which where is encoded with enough simplicity and descriptive power to satisfy most needs to describe the location of Web content. It is the product of an informal collaboration of geospatial professionals applying expertise in Web standards, syndication, and the Semantic Web.OpenGIS® Specifications support interoperable solutions that geo-enable the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT.The specifications empower technology developers to make complex spatial information and services accessible and useful with all kinds of applications.

The OGC(R) Releases Sensor Web Enablement White Paper

Wayland, Mass., July 20, 2006 – The membership of the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) has approved and released the OGC Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) White Paper as an official public OGC White Paper ( OGC Document 06-046r2 ).A sensor network is a computer accessible network of many spatially distributed devices using sensors to monitor conditions at different locations, such as temperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants.A Sensor Web refers to Web accessible sensor networks and archived sensor data that can be discovered and accessed using standard protocols and interfaces. In the OGC Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) activity, members of the OGC are defining, testing, and documenting a consistent framework of open standards for exploiting Web-connected sensors and sensor systems of any type.Sensor Web Enablement presents many opportunities for adding a real-time sensor dimension to the Internet and the Web.OpenGIS® Specifications support interoperable solutions that geo-enable the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT.The specifications empower technology developers to make complex spatial information and services accessible and useful with all kinds of applications.
