OGC Names Raj Singh Director Interoperability Programs

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) announced today that Dr. Raj Singh has been appointed Director, Interoperability Programs for OGC.Dr. Singh will report to George Percivall, Executive Director, Interoperability Architecture and lead for OGCs Interoperability Program.Dr. Singh will begin by playing a key role in the third OGC Web Services (OWS-3) Interoperability Initiative, a major testbed activity to extend the OGC baseline to enable an interoperable, multi-source decision support environment based on geospatial Web services ( http://www.opengeospatial.org/initiatives/?iid=162 ).Dr. Singh has made significant business and research contributions to the geospatial industry.Dr. Singh holds Doctorate and Masters degrees in City Planning from MIT and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Brown University.

OGC announces Sensor Alert Service Interoperability Experiment

(OGC) will soon begin an Interoperability Experiment to create a draft specification and implementations of a Sensor Alert Service (SAS).Therefore, this Interoperability Experiment will create a draft Sensor Alert Service (SAS) specification for consideration by the OGC SWE Working Group.An initial task of the SAS Interoperability Experiment will be to determine if existing standards meet the focused SAS requirements.The SAS Interoperability Experiment Initiator Team is comprised of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL); Radiance Technology; Innovative Research, Ideas, & Services Corporation (IRIS); and Intergraph.Other OGC members are encouraged to participate in or sign on as observers for this Interoperability Experiment.

OGC announces Risk and Crisis Management Working Group

Wayland, MA, May 2, 2005 – The Open Geospatial Consortium Inc. (OGC) has established a Risk and Crisis Management Working Group (RCM WG) to address the global need for better sharing of geospatial information in risk management and emergency management.The RCM WG will communicate the benefits of the OGC consensus process and specifications to the risk and crisis management communities and will work to validate and assess OGCs OpenGIS(R) specifications and other interoperability specifications in risk and crisis management scenarios.The work of the RCM WG will also relate to the U.S.The RCM WG had its first meeting on April 5, 2005 at OGC Technical Committee and Planning Committee meetings in Frascati, Italy.The specifications empower technology developers to make complex spatial information and services accessible and useful with all kinds of applications.

Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Conference held in Cairo

April 29, 2005, Boston, MA – Spatial Data in an Information Societ was a primary theme of the 8th Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) Conference held 16-21 April 2005 in Cairo, Egypt.Joint collaborators with the GSDI Association in hosting the combined conference included the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and the Egyptian Survey Authority.The GSDI Association also took time to honor and thank the US Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), the ESRI Corporation, and Intergraph Corporation for providing critical core support to the GSDI Association in its formative stages.The Associations next global conference will be held in Santiago, Chile on 6-10 November 2006 and will focus on experiences in the use of spatial and related information technologies in reducing poverty.The GSDI Association invites government, industry and academic organizations, as well as individuals, to take part in GSDI programs.

OGC to Begin Geospatial Semantic Web Interoperability Experiment

gpercivall [at] opengeospatial.orgWayland, MA, April 12, 2005 – The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Review Board has approved the launch of the Geospatial Semantic Web (GSW) Interoperability Experiment (IE).The Interoperability Experiment will take several important steps towards the development of the Geospatial Semantic Web, where discovery, query, and consumption of geospatial content are based on formal semantic specification.This experiment aims to augment existing Web focused mapping specifications (OpenGIS® Web Feature Service and Filter Encoding) with a semantic query capability, through the definition of an ontology (a hierarchical structuring of knowledge) for the geospatial intelligence community.Currently nine organizations are participating in the Interoperability Experiment including players from the public, private and academic areas.OpenGIS® Specifications support interoperable solutions that geo-enable the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT.

Sensor Web Symposium Set for April 14-15

This, the third OGC Emerging Technology Summit (ETS III), will be held April 14-15, 2005 at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC.Registration information, including information about group discounts, is available at http://www.gita.org/events/ets/iii/ .In OGCs Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) effort, the ORNL SensorNET team is working with other OGC members to build a Web-based global framework for discovering, accessing and tasking the rapidly growing number of fixed and mobile network-connected sensors.Advancing the Sensor Web will highlight the work that has been done and the work that remains to be done.OpenGIS® Specifications support interoperable solutions that geo-enable the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT.

OGC announces GML-in-JPEG Interoperability Experiment

This Interoperability Experiment will implement several prototype GMLJP2 codecs (a codec is a data compressor/decompressor) based on the OGC draft specification, GML in JPEG 2000 for Geographic Imagery (OGC project document 04-045).The draft specification GML in JPEG 2000 for Geographic Imagery was submitted to OGC by Galdos Systems Inc. and Lizard Tech.The proposed specification includes: – Specification of the uses of GML within JPEG 2000 – Packaging mechanisms for including GML within JPEG 2000.Results of the experiment will include an Interoperability Experiment Report and a demonstration of the interoperable components developed in the experiment.An Interoperability Experiment is a process led and executed by OGC members to achieve a narrowly defined technical objective that furthers the OGC Technical Baseline.

OGC and USGIF Illustrate Interoperability at Inaugural European DGI Event

Feb 25, 2005, Wayland, Mass – The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) hosted a compelling demonstration of the power of geospatial interoperability for attendees at the inaugural European Defense Geospatial Intelligence Conference (DGI) held in late January in London.Conference organizers Worldwide Business Research (WBR) note that it is not always the case that you will understand how partner nations are working.OGC members take that challenge very seriously and continue to develop, implement and test standards that enable such interoperability.Data and services were provided by more than two dozen participants linked together by OGC and other geospatial standards.While many of the products are available off the shelf others were updated to support the standards specifically for this event.
