OGC helps develop UN’s geospatial standards guide for UN Member States

The Committee recognized the important work done by three international standards development organisations: the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), Technical Committee 211 of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TC 211) and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).At an earlier request of the Committee, the three standards organizations co-wrote the Guide to the Role of Standards in Geospatial Information Management.Robert Ward, President, International Hydrographic Organization, explained, “Stakeholders in all sectors of society and the economy benefit when industry, governments, organisations and institutions work together to develop, maintain and use agreed to international standards. The OGC® is an international geospatial standards consortium of more than 495 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available standards.OGC standards support interoperable solutions that geo-enable the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT.

OGC hires Dr. Ingo Simonis to lead geomatic sciences initiatives

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) announces that it has appointed Dr. Ingo Simonis to the position of Director, Interoperability Programs and Science. As Director, Interoperability Programs and Science, Simonis, who is based in Germany, will work with OGC members to plan, manage, and develop architectures for OGC interoperability initiatives such as testbeds, pilots, and interoperability experiments.Since 2000, Ingo Simonis has been a principal developer of OGCs Sensor Web Enablement initiative. He has authored four OGC standards and been a member of the OGC Interoperability Projects Team. While pursuing all of these activities, Ingo Simonis has also had a distinguished academic career in the fields of ecology and geoinformatics.

OGC President Mark Reichardt to Deliver Geospatial Keynote at GEO-Energy Summit

The Open Geospatial Consortium – Mark Reichardt, president of the Open Geospatial Consortium, will deliver the geospatial keynote address at the GEO-Energy Summit and Educational Forum on November 13, 2014.The Summit is a two day event that will be held November 12-13 at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration and hosted by GEO Huntsville and Energy Huntsville in conjunction with the U.S. Space and Rocket Center (USSRC).Keynote speaker for the Summit will be Mr. Robert Cardillo, newly appointed director of the National Geospatial-intelligence Agency. The objective of GEO Huntsville is to create a collaborative effort among these entities to support workforce growth and economic development.Directions Media, with offices in Huntsville, Alabama and Glencoe, Illinois, encompasses four media properties: Directions Magazine, and All Points Blog, as well as the Location Intelligence and GEO Huntsville annual conferences.

Final Call for OGC Testbed 11 Sponsors

In recent weeks, sponsors committed to supporting the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Testbed 11 have been documenting use cases, submitting requirements, and interoperability scenarios for this testbed. If new potential sponsors’ requirements align roughly with what is now in the plan, those organizations can still become sponsors and tune the testbed plan to meet their needs. The current Testbed 11 plan addresses:Interface and Encoding engineering REST and SOAP for the OGC suite of service standards Using JSON and GeoJSON across OGC service standards.Security – standards based solutions to implementing Authentication, Authorization, Access, Control and Auditing capabilities for the suite of OGC service standards.Semantically Enabled OGC Web Services: Semantic Mediation between Vocabularies and Ontologies; Linked Data; Data ProvenanceClimate change is the theme for the Testbed 11 scenario.

OGC supports American Geographical Society Geography 2050 Fall Symposium

10 September 2014 – The OGC is a partner with the American Geographical Society, the Earth Institute and the US Geospatial Intelligence Foundation in presenting the American Geographical Society (AGS) Fall Symposium, “Geography 2050: Mounting an Expedition to the Future”.Since 1851, AGS has been a leading advocate for geography in the United States and around the world. The Society promotes the use of geography in business, government, science, and education. The OGC® is an international geospatial standards consortium of more than 475 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available standards.OGC standards support interoperable solutions that geo-enable the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT.

OGC appoints Dr. Terry Idol as Executive Director, Interoperability Program

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) announces that it has appointed Dr. Terry Idol as Executive Director, Interoperability Program.Continuing OGC’s leadership in advancing geospatial information, OGC is pleased to announce Dr. Terry Idol as the new Executive Director of OGC’s Interoperability Program.Previously, Terry served as Initiative Director of the OGC Critical Infrastructure Protection Initiative while he was on loan to OGC staff from BAE Systems.George Percivall commented, Executive Director for OGC’s Interoperability Program is a challenging position that will provide Terry the opportunity to work with OGC members and the broader community to advance the state of practice of geospatial information.OGC standards support interoperable solutions that geo-enable the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT.

The OGC seeks comments on candidate OGC Web Processing Service 2.0 Standard

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGCⓇ) membership seeks public comment on the candidate OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) Version 2.0 Interface Standard. The OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) Interface Standard provides a standard interface that simplifies the task of making simple or complex computational processing services accessible via web services. Moreover, the WPS standard supports both immediate processing for computational tasks that take little time and asynchronous processing for more complex and time consuming tasks. While the OGC WPS standard was designed with spatial processing in mind, it can also be used to readily insert non-spatial processing tasks into a web services environment. The 30 day public comment period for the candidate OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) Version 2.0 Interface Standard ends 25 September 2014 .

The OGC approves best practice for RESTful encoding of OGC Sensor Planning Service for Earth Observation Satellite Tasking

22 August 2014 – The Technical and Planning Committees have approved release of RESTful encoding of OGC® Sensor Planning Service for Earth Observation Satellite Tasking as an official OGC Best Practice.OGC members in the Earth Observation community developed in recent years a set of standards for communicating the complex instructions involved in tasking satellite-borne imaging systems. This OGC Best Practice document specifies software interfaces, bindings, requirements and conformance classes that enable complete workflows for the tasking of sensor planning services for Earth Observation (EO) satellites. The RESTful encoding of OGC® Sensor Planning Service for Earth Observation Satellite Tasking Best Practice document can be downloaded from: https://portal.ogc.org/files/57203.OGC standards support interoperable solutions that geo-enable the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT.

OGC announces new Urban Planning Domain Working Group

An OGC Urban Planning Domain Working Group (SWG) has been chartered to define the role for OGC standards and related activities within the Urban Planning discipline and to provide an open forum for the discussion and presentation of interoperability requirements, use cases, pilots, and implementations of OGC standards in this domain. Also, these technologies are permanent and rapidly evolving elements of life in modern cities, which makes them subjects for urban studies and urban planning. In all of those technology domains, open standards can facilitate the development, publication, discovery, assessment, analysis, portrayal and use of information. The OGC Urban Planning Domain Working Group intends to discover requirements for open spatial standards in information systems involved in the planning, design, use, maintenance and governance of publicly accessible spaces.Requirements presented and discussed in OGC Domain Working Groups are typically addressed in existing or yet-to-be chartered OGC Standards Working Groups and in the OGCs collaborative activities with other standards development organizations.
